Vonnie Ewing Lopez, known professionally as Vonnie Lopez, is an American gospel singer, songwriter, worship leader, and minister from Lake Charles, Louisiana. She became known as a member of the Kurt Carr Singers and later began a solo recording career with Riverphlo Entertainment. In 2019, she appeared as a contestant on the CBS television talent competition The World's Best.[1][2]

Early life and family

Lopez was raised in a Pentecostal ministerial and musical family in Louisiana. She is the daughter of pastor and gospel singer Murrell LaVonne Ewing and songwriter and musician Joan Clark Ewing. Her brother is Landy Ewing.[3]

Her parents conducted an extensive pastoral and music ministry through Eastwood Pentecostal Church in Lake Charles. Joan Ewing wrote gospel songs, while Murrell Ewing was a pastor, evangelist, recording artist, and founding member of the Conquerors Quartet.[3]

Lopez has stated that she was born with congenital amusia and was unable to accurately perceive musical pitch as a child. According to CBS News, she prayed for the ability to sing and began developing her singing voice during her teenage years.[1]

Music career

Kurt Carr Singers

Lopez became a member of the Kurt Carr Singers in 2003 and performed with the ensemble during a period in which it received recognition in the gospel music industry.[4]

As a vocalist, she has performed with or alongside gospel artists including Yolanda Adams, Marvin Sapp, CeCe Winans, Donnie McClurkin, Walter Hawkins, and J. Moss.[5]

Songwriting

In addition to performing, Lopez has worked as a songwriter. Her compositions have been recorded by the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir and the Nor-Cal Mass Choir.[2][5]

AllMusic credits Lopez as a composer on recordings including material associated with the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir.[6]

Solo career

In 2012, Lopez signed with Riverphlo Entertainment, a company founded by producer Luther "Mano" Hanes, and released the single "The Name of Jesus".[2][7]

She released the single "Love Is True" in 2019. The song was written and produced by Hanes and was released before her appearance on The World's Best.[8][9]

Her digital catalog also includes featured appearances on Pentecostal and gospel recordings, including "When Grace Speaks", "There Are Somethings You Got to Know for Sure", and the live single "It's Revival Time".[9]

The World's Best

In 2019, Lopez was selected as one of the contestants on the first season of the CBS talent competition The World's Best, hosted by James Corden. Her participation followed the online circulation of a video in which she performed "Oh How I Love Jesus".[5]

During her first televised appearance, she performed Andraé Crouch's "My Tribute (To God Be the Glory)". She advanced from the audition round and later returned for a battle-round performance.[1][5]

Ministry and humanitarian work

Lopez has served in ministry with her husband, pastor Aaron Lopez, at Eastwood Pentecostal Church in Lake Charles. Sources published during the beginning of her solo career described her as a minister, worship leader, speaker, and church leader.[2][10]

She has also been involved with Jordan International Aid, a Christian humanitarian organization. Reports from 2012 described her as the organization's vice president and stated that she participated in relief and mission projects in countries including Haiti, Nicaragua, India, Kenya, Cambodia, and Japan.[10]
