Education
Voranai attended Pramahataisuksa School at the elementary level. At the age of 12, he moved to Austin,[1] Texas.
In 1996, he graduated from the University of Texas.[2], with a degree in Political Science.
Career
Journalist career
Voranai has a long career as a journalist in Thailand. He became famous for his writing articles critical of the political society of Thailand.[3]
Voranai joined the Bangkok Post Newspaper,[4] The Post Publishing Company, in 2001 as a business reporter. He became well known at this time and described as a "fearless journalist who doesn't shirk from controversy".[5] His articles touch on subjects such as "class snobbery, Plato's noble lies (or the government's), censorship, sex tourism and the many struggles facing every Thai".[5]
The following year he became the first Editor in Chief of BK Magazine, a lifestyle and city-living magazine in Bangkok. After four years at BK Magazine, he returned to The BangkokPost Publishing and started Guru Magazine, also a lifestyle and city-living magazine[6].
After four years as Editor in Chief of Guru Magazine, he moved over to the newspaper section and became a Political and Social Commentator for the Bangkok Post Sunday Edition.[7]
In 2009, he published the essay "The Conscience of Somchai" in Australia's Griffith Review.[8]
In 2011, Voranai co-hosted the English-language daily political news talk show Morning Focus on NBT Channel 11.[9]
He is also a contributor for Khaosodenglish[10]
He won the MR Ayumongol Sonakul "writer of the year" award in 2011 for his Sunday columns[11] for the BangkokPost.
In 2014, he became the first Editor in Chief GQ Magazine Thailand[12]
In 2020, he created Thisrupt, an English-language online media platform that provides commentaries on Thailand's politics, culture and society. This vision of Thisrupt is to "push the envelope and not simply be PR for the government",[13] to "explain that politics, society, and economics are really all just aspects of culture",[13] and Thisrupt's goal is to "focus on all facets of 'Thainess'".[13] Due to Thai laws prohibiting politicians from owning a media company,[citation needed] Voranai closed down Thisrupt in 2021 before joining politics.
Political Career
In 2021, Voranai became a co-founder and party leader of the new political party Ruam Thai United. He entered into politics with the goal "for politics, the economy, society and education to move forward"[14] and claim that Thailand "today is not democracy, it is a 250-senate system of dictatorship." [15]
Voranai has joined Chart Pattana Kla Party in November 2022. [16]
