Vote Hemp is a Washington, DC based grassroots nonprofit organization with the mission to legalize hemp farming in the United States.[1] Vote Hemp was formed by members of the hemp industry in 2000 and began working to educate state and federal legislators and policy makers on the benefits of cannabis hemp for farmers and manufacturers.[2] Vote Hemp began advocating for hemp policy reform with the U.S. Congress and was instrumental in getting legislation introduced and gaining cosponsors for it. Politico noted that Vote Hemp was one of only two organizations lobbying for hemp in 2009 and how registered lobbyists on hemp had grown to over 70 by 2019[3]. In 2005, Vote Hemp worked with Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX) to draft the first modern federal hemp bill, H.R. 3037 which was introduced at a packed luncheon organized by the non-profit.[4] Vote Hemp worked Jean Rawson at the Congressional Research Service (CRS) beginning in 2005 to educate CRS about hemp and provide factual data.[5] Vote Hemp representatives regularly spoke with the media regarding hemp policy and continue to do so today[6]. After the legalization of hemp farming in the 2018 Farm Bill[7], Vote Hemp advocated with USDA for key changes to their hemp regulations.[8] Vote Hemp also documented hemp acreage and licenses from 2014 to 2019 with Hemp Crop Reports[9] prior to USDA statistics which were widely reported in the media[10]. Vote Hemp regularly attended trade shows to promote the benefits of hemp farming in the U.S. including the World Ag Expo[11].
Legal Cases[edit]
Vote Hemp was instrumental in several key court cases to support and advance the hemp industry. In 2001 the DEA published an interpretive rule[12] that effectively outlawed hemp foods if they contained "any" THC despite the fact that non-viable hemp seeds and their derivatives were explicitly excluded from control.[13] Vote Hemp board members David Bronner and Eric Steenstra worked along with attorneys Joe Sandler and Patrick Goggin to craft a legal response that was filed as HIA v. DEA.[14] After hemp was legalized in the Farm Bill of 2018, Vote Hemp got involved with financial support from Dr. Bronner's, and hired attorney Tim Purdon to represent Alex White Plume, a Lakota who had attempted to grow hemp asserting his sovereign rights under the 1868 Treaty of Fort Laramie. Purdon successfully petitioned the court to remove the injunction.in March 2016.[15] With the injunction removed, White Plume was able to grow hemp without interference from the federal government.[16]
