WAVINCITY

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

WAVINCITY is a Hong Kong–based urban soundscape recording project established in 2021. The project documents the city’s acoustic environments through field recordings linked to an interactive sound map and a detailed sound library.[1][2] It presents geolocated recordings of everyday urban sounds from across Hong Kong and makes them accessible online. WAVINCITY functions as a sound archive and documentation platform, capturing changes in the city’s soundscape and supporting the study and preservation of Hong Kong’s auditory environment.

Background

WAVINCITY was founded in 2021 by Hong Kong–based sound artist and field recordist Peter Wong Tsz Kin.[3] The project was initiated in response to the limited representation of sound in conventional forms of urban documentation, with the aim of capturing the sonic characteristics of Hong Kong’s built and social environments. By linking field recordings to specific geographic locations, WAVINCITY offers an alternative approach to experiencing and understanding the city through listening.[4]

Sound map and archive

At the core of WAVINCITY is its interactive sound map, which presents field recordings tied to specific locations throughout Hong Kong. Users can listen to recordings directly through the map interface. In addition, WAVINCITY maintains a sound library that provides a more detailed and categorized listing of recordings, allowing users to browse by type, location, or environment. Selected recordings are available for download in high-quality audio formats. The archive focuses on everyday urban sounds and changing acoustic environments, contributing to long-term soundscape documentation.[5][6]

Independent coverage

WAVINCITY has been featured in interviews and articles by independent media and cultural platforms. An interview in the Hong Kong culture website Homeland Map discussed WAVINCITY’s field recording practices, noting that founder Peter Wong began documenting urban sounds during the 2021 pandemic, and described his approach to selecting locations, capturing extended recordings, and reflecting on how everyday soundscapes become part of the city’s auditory memory and record changes over time.[7]

The project has also been discussed in Chinese-language media, including a feature in Ming Pao that described WAVINCITY’s field recordings in the context of changes in the city’s soundscape, noting how evolving everyday sounds, such as pedestrian crossing beeps, form part of the urban memory and reflect shifts in the environment and daily life.[8]

Artistic works and installations

Beyond sound mapping and archiving, WAVINCITY has been associated with soundscape installations and creative presentations that interpret urban audio materials in immersive formats. In January 2025, a soundscape installation titled Echoes and Imagery presented selected field recordings alongside spatial audio systems and visual elements. The installation was shown at 1a Space in Kowloon, Hong Kong.[9]

Additionally, the collaborative work Sound-Path: Illustrated Echoes was presented in 2024 at the Jockey Club Future Laboratory of Arts Tech. The project explored auditory imprints of specific neighbourhoods through sound recordings and listening-based approaches to urban space.[10][11]

Other uses

Recordings from WAVINCITY have appeared on third-party audio platforms and sound libraries, where they are used for creative and media production purposes.[12]
