WE Station (Chinese: 中電綠源) is a waste-to-energy (WTE) power station located in Nim Wan, Tuen Mun, Hong Kong. This plant opened in 2020 and is operated by CLP Group. [2] It uses internal combustion engine generators powered using landfill gas, providing 10 megawatts (MW) of electricity for the Hong Kong electrical grid. It is currently the only WTE power station in Hong Kong.
CLP currently owns 70% of the equity of this plant with China Southern Power Grid owning the remaining 30%.[2]
Description[edit]
The power station is located on the site of West New Territories Landfill in Nim Wan, Hong Kong's largest landfill which receives 6,400 t (7,100 short tons) of municipal waste daily.
Underground gas collection wells extract landfill gas from landfill waste and transports it to a gas treatment facility where impurities are removed and sent to the leachate treatment facility. The usable landfill gas is sent to the generators to be combusted for electricity.[3] The electricity is then sent to Hong Kong's electrical grid.
Technical Details[edit]
WE station entered commercial operations in the first quarter of 2020. It uses five 2 MW internal combustion engine generators to burn landfill gas, produced by the decomposition of solid waste, at a rate of 4,500 m3/hour. [3] Nitrogen oxides released from the combustion are removed through a selective catalytic reduction facility.[3]
In 2021, the plant produced 38 GWh (140 TJ) or 0.1% of Hong Kong's total electricity production of the year.[1][4]This plant is capable of removing carbon emissions by 34,680 t (76,460,000 lb) annually.[3]
