WINGS WorldQuest

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

WINGS WorldQuest is a non-profit organization whose aim is to support and recognize women who work in science and exploration. The organization was founded in New York City by Milbry Polk and Leila Hadley Luce in 2003.

WINGS is notable for the fact that it provides unrestricted funding to women field scientists and explorers through its Fellows Program.

In 2014, WINGS established its Emergency Fund, which provides financial assistance to WINGS Fellows who find themselves in danger or need immediate evacuation while in the field.

History[edit]

In 2003, Milbry Polk and Leila Hadley Luce founded WINGS WorldQuest to help bring attention to the accomplishments of women in the field sciences and to inspire future explorers.[1] Because the organization focuses on only women explorers, it has helped to change the field of exploration, which has historically been dominated by men.[2]

Women of Discovery Award[edit]

The WINGS Women of Discovery Awards were established to honor the work of women scientists and explorers, as well as to provide unrestricted funding to support their continued work. Since 2003, more than 80 women have been recognized as WINGS WorldQuest Fellows, and the organization has provided more than $600,000 in grant funding to those individuals.[3] Notable women who have won the Women of Discovery Award include Jane Goodall[4], Sylvia Earle, Elizabeth Bennett[5] Ana Pinto[6] and Ann Bancroft.[7]
