Wade Whitehead (born March 6, 1972) is an American educator, speaker, and consultant. He is a 2016 inductee to the National Teachers Hall of Fame.

Life & Education

Whitehead was born in Bristol, Tennessee and grew up in Washington County, Virginia, where his parents worked as elementary school teachers.[1] He studied Anthropology and Elementary Education at The College of William & Mary[2] and Educational Leadership at the University of Virginia.[3] Certified in gifted education and as a school administrator[4], he is a current student in the School Leadership & Management program at Harvard University. Whitehead lives in Roanoke, Virginia, where he teaches at Crystal Spring School.[5]

Career

Teaching & Professional Impact

A fourth-generation classroom teacher, Whitehead advocates a "one-size-fits-few" approach to teaching and learning. He believes that imagination, discovery, and sharing are the "secret ingredients" of learning.[6] These lead to the "ultimate outcome: children creating, out of the elements around them, that which did not exist before."[7] He has said that students deserve "choice, autonomy, self-determination, and responsibility" and that school should be "centered around the truth that every kid is unique and can achieve. Period."[8][9] He once noted, "parents and administrators listen with amazement when kids talk about being creative, having fun, and meeting standards. It can be done. It's a matter of throwing curiosity, expectations, flexibility, and respect into a big pot, stirring them around, and enjoying what comes out."[10]

Whitehead has been a National Board Certified Teacher since 1999.[11] He has presented hundreds of keynotes, workshops, and seminars around the world on topics including differentiated classrooms, equitable instruction, school design, and student engagement.[12] His article on technology-free, at-home learning has been shared more than 100,000 times.[7][6]

Through work on policy and practice committees, he has challenged others to rethink instruction, assessment, and accountability.[13][14] He has called for reform of high school graduation and curriculum requirements, shorter and more authentic assessments, and use of learning indicators beyond test scores in school accreditation.[15] He has championed multi-tier teacher licensure systems, more competitive pay for educators, and attention to teacher quality as the most important school-controlled variable in student success.[16][17][18] In 2014, he was appointed by Governor Terry McAuliffe as a charter member of the Virginia Standards of Learning Innovation Committee.[19]

Whitehead is Co-Founder and Executive Director of the Teachers of Promise Institute. The Institute has honored thousands of future educators through an annual program of celebration, elevation, and activation.[20][1] He also established the Teachers of Promise Foundation, which funds and supports the Institute.[21]

Whitehead serves on Boards of Directors at the Reynolds Center for Teaching, Learning, and Creativity[22], the Teachers of Promise Foundation[23], and The First Tee Roanoke Valley.[24] In 2020, he helped create the inaugural "I, Too, Am the Dream" essay contest at the Milken Center for Advancing the American Dream.[25]

Honors & Awards

Whitehead's professional recognitions include the Milken Family Foundation National Educator Award[26], the McGlothlin Foundation Award for Teaching Excellence[27], the USA Today All-USA Teacher Team, and the Virginia Lottery Super Teacher Award.[28]. In 2016, he was the only practicing classroom teacher in America to be inducted into the National Teachers Hall of Fame.[29][30] In 2017, he was honored for "significant contributions to the field of education" in a joint resolution by the Virginia General Assembly.[31]
