Wall of Hero, October 2020

Wall of Hero is a collage of photographs displayed on a wall dedicated to its namesake, Sergeant Michael Gates, Hero of the Cache County Jail. The Wall of Hero is located in a restricted room within the confines of the Cache County Jail, located in the city of Logan, Cache County, Utah, and accessible only by a few Cache County Sheriff's deputies who have passed an extensive background check and been given a special key that unlocks the door to the restricted room.

History

Initially, the Cache County Jail commander made a Wall of Heroes erroneously depicting all jailers as heroes. This attempted dedication to give positive recognition to correctional officers was disbanded shortly after a few proved themselves unworthy by their unethical conduct.[1]

On February 26, 2020, the Cache County Sheriff's Office Facebook page posted a photo prominently featuring Sergeant Michael Gates.[2] Sgt. Gates' subordinates recognized the heroic nature of his appearance, and being familiar with his integrity, positive leadership, and achievements,[3] both with the Cache County Sheriff's Office and in other community roles, they created the Wall of Hero, as it was clear there is only one hero for the office.

Description

First Wall of Hero photograph, February 2020

Wall of Hero is a memorial art collection of photographs honoring Michael Gates, a sergeant with the Cache County Sheriff's Office and a hero within the office. The first photo was displayed on February 26, 2020, and subsequent photos have been continuously added. Photographs creating Wall of Hero feature Sgt. Gates' involvement with Polar Plunge, SWAT[4], SERT, Utah State University Football[5], and his achievements of a record high jump for the Cache County Sheriff's Office and other awards received. Photos used for Wall of Hero generally obscure or remove other faces, with few exceptions, so that the prominence is reserved for Sgt. Gates out of respect for his heroism.

The room containing Wall of Hero is located in an office adjacent to the booking area of the Cache County Jail. Those with immediate access to the room and Wall of Hero have passed an extensive background check, probationary period, and been selected by the jail commander to receive access to the restricted area. Those who have been granted access and received the limitedly-issued key may allow other qualified individuals to access the room and view Wall of Hero.

Wall of Hero has provided a boost in morale for staff since its creation.
