Walter D. Woods (born September 19, 1963) is a nonprofit executive who serves as CEO of The Humana Foundation.[1] Walter is a board member of Greater Louisville Project, a mentor in ADWeek's Executive Mentor Program, [2] a founding member of the Louisville Business First Leadership Trust, [3] and a Commissioner on the Kentucky Kerner Commission 2.0. [4]

Early life and education[edit]

Walter was born on an Air Force Base in Blytheville, Arkansas. Walter grew up in a military family and lived in domestic and international communities. Walter said that his background "has given me an understanding of the need for investment in social, moral, intellectual, reputational and financial philanthropic capital and the criticality of private philanthropy impacting human lives positively."[5]

With financial support from a Pell Grant, Walter was admitted into The Johns Hopkins University and transferred to Howard University. In 1987, he graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration in Finance. In 1989, Walter graduated from the Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University with a Master of Business Administration with concentrations in Marketing, Economics, and Decision Sciences.[6] In 2013, he completed the Executive Program for Non-Profit Leaders at Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business, Palo Alto, California.

Career[edit]

Walter began his career in 1994 at the American Gas Association American Gas Association.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Washington In 2004, he joined Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Washington (BGCGW) and spent two years in its Development and Communications areas as their Senior Vice President.[7] Here, he was able to draw on his marketing and communications skills to develop and execute funding strategies that doubled revenue.

The World Bank Group In 2006, Walter left the nonprofit direct services world to work for the philanthropic arm of the World Bank Group in Washington, DC.[8] [9]. From 2006-2010, Walter consulted The World Bank Group's local community outreach The World Bank Group, where he oversaw grant making and a wide range of initiatives in Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, DC.[10] Also, at the World Bank Group, he co-led the East of the River Initiative a participatory, performance management-based philanthropic approach to help nonprofits serving older youth in Washington, DC better identify, measure, and communicate their community impact.[11]

AARP Foundation In 2010, Walter was named Vice President of Strategic Programs - Isolation Impact Area (AARP Foundation) where he created an institutional understanding of social isolation that resulted in its current web presence: Connect2Affect.

The Evangelical Lutheran Good Samaritan Foundation In 2014, Walter was appointed President of The Evangelical Lutheran Good Samaritan Foundation in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. In this role he developed new and sustainable revenue streams in support of The Evangelical Lutheran Good Samaritan Society’s innovation work and developed a more intentional symbiotic relationship between the Foundation and Good Samaritan Society.

The Humana Foundation In 2017, Walter was appointed CEO of The Humana Foundation.[12] In this role he serves as chief executive with accountability for defining and leading the execution of strategies that advance the mission of this philanthropic arm of Humana Inc dedicated to co-creating communities where leadership, culture, and systems work to improve and sustain positive health outcomes. His health equity focus continues to evolve the work of the foundation from an activity-focused approach to a performance management-based approach that deploys social, moral, intellectual, reputational, and financial philanthropic capital in targeted communities in the Southeast to address food security and financial asset security.
