Rear-Admiral Walter Evershed DSO (1907-1969) was an officer in the Royal Navy until his retirement in 1960. He joined Royal Naval College Dartmouth at 14. Following graduation he entered service in 1921 and by the outbreak of the Second World War he was the Lieutenant Commander of HMS Wivern. In the following years, he changed ship twice before an injury in early 1941 forced him to return home. Following the war he was Director of Naval Operations and Trade and in 1957 he became took command of HM Dockyard in Rosyth, Scotland.
