Early Life
Walter J. Pearson was born in Bluefield, West Virginia, on October 29th, 1903. In 1908, Pearson's family moved to Portland, Oregon, where he was raised and educated in Portland public schools,Washington High School, and continued his education at the University of Oregon. Subsequently, Pearson entered the insurance industry and founded his own agency in 1944, which he developed into one of the largest in the State of Oregon.[1]
Public Service
Pearson, a Democrat in a predominantly Republican era, gained election to the Oregon House of Representatives and soon ran a successful campaign to the Oregon State Senate, representing Multnomah County. In 1948, Pearson was elected Oregon State Treasurer and served from 1949 to 1953, making him one of the few Democrats to hold that office then.[2]
When Pearson returned to the Senate, he became an important leader in a chamber that was deeply divided. After a long leadership deadlock in 1957, he gained more influence and was elected President of the Senate in 1959. This position sometimes made him Acting Governor.[3]
Death
Beyond the legislature, Pearson remained a proactive figure in the Democratic Party and later served in a federal administrative role under President John F. Kennedy. Pearson passed away in 1972, concluding a career that spanned business and statewide legislative leadership in mid-20th-century Oregon.
