Walter Rothenbuhler and his colleagues investigated the genetics of AFB resistance and hygienic behaviour. Honeybee hygienic behaviour first received attention as a potential mechanism for control of American foulbrood (AFB). They demonstrated that the level of expression of hygienic behavior was variale between colonies from different lines. Queens raised from susceptible stocks showed symptoms of disease faster and died sooner than those raised from resistant ones.
