Wang Ching-Shuang
Wang Ching-Shuang (1922-), born in Shengang District, Taichung City, is a lacquer artist and master artisan in Taiwan. He had worked with Yen Shui-Long in launching the Nantou County Handicrafts Research Group. Wang has devoted his life to advancing the craftsmanship of lacquer art and promoting lacquer craft education and creation. His works are famous for their elaborate techniques of “taka maki-e” (高蒔繪).[1].
Life
Wang Ching-Shuang was born in Shengang, Taichung City in 1922 (Taisho 11 under the Japanese ruling). He studied in the division of lacquer craft of the Private Taichung Craft School. With outstanding performance, he was recommended by Yamanaka Tadasu (山中公), then Principal of the Taichung Craft School to study in Japan. He studied in the Tokyo School of Fine Arts (now Tokyo University of the Arts) under masters such as Wada Sanzo (和田三造), Hano Teizo (羽野禎三) and Koumo Touzan (河面冬山) in the daytime. He went to the Tokyo Specialized School for Graphics and the Seika School of Fine Arts to study painting in the evening while learning sculpting with Kuroiwa Tannaka (黑岩淡哉) on Sundays[2]. The relentlessly diligent study laid down the solid base of his works.
After returning to Taiwan in 1944, Wang Ching-Shuang started teaching in the Private Taichung Specialized School of Crafts and the Handcrafts Promotion Center. In 1952, Wang was invited by then mayor of Nantou County to work with Yen Shui-Long in launching the Nantou County Handicrafts Research Group (now NTCRI)[3].
In 1959, Wang Ching-Shuang established the Mei-Yan Lacquer Workshop (initially in Taichung, then moved to Nantou, now Mei-Yan Lacquer Art Ltd.). Wang specializes in creating sumptuous lacquerware with the elaborate technique of “taka maki-e”. He believes that craft production should take three elements into consideration: design, technique and market[4].
Wang Ching-Shuang has devoted himself to the craftsmanship, education and promotion of lacquer art for over eighty years since he was only sixteen. Three generations of his family are involved in the production and education of lacquer art; the Wang family is one of the important lacquer art families in Taiwan[5].
