Wangpai Yushi (Chinese: 王牌御史), known in English as Ace Censorate, is a Chinese manhua and animation series produced by Tencent Animation and Comics. The manhua began to publish in January 2014 while the animated series began to air from 27 June 2014 to 19 April 2016.

Synopsis

In a world where yin and yang have lost its balance and day merged with night, humans and monsters learn to coexist yet frequently clash with each other. The censorates emerge as the hope of humanity as they do their best to fight the ‘untamed’ monsters yet also deal with a lot of hilarious issues in their activities.

Differences between manhua and animation

In the original manhua script, most characters interacted with normal people outside their supernatural friends and foes; while in the animated series, various characters with references to series like Gintama, Transformers and Puella Magi Madoka Magica have been included.

Characters

Ye Yan (Chinese: 叶言; pinyin: Yè Yán)

Voiced by: Shen Dawei

A fifteen years old powerful censorate as well as a student in the Xiahou Middle School. He's serious, yet somewhat funny by his masquerade hobby. He has the ability to summon the ghosts of powerful ancient creatures, though he is also skilled in martial arts, to capture monsters and other creatures. Despite this, he is strangely afraid of Huang Xiaoyan.

Huang Xiaoyan (Chinese: 黄晓烟; pinyin: Huáng Xiǎoyān)

Voiced by: Cu Cu

A thirteen (in animated series is fifteen) years old Taoist Order and also a student in Xiahou with a duty to capture immortals, as well as the holder of an ancient Zhuxian sword, she is a dedicated, yet somewhat arrogant girl. She has an annoying relationship with Ye Yan, even sleeps in his house, and Ye Yan frequently brings bad lucks on her. Despite this, Xiaoyan also secretly harbours her crush on Ye Yan, though Ye Yan remains obvious to her affection.

Li Lingbiao (Chinese: 李陵彪; pinyin: Lǐ Língbiāo)

Voiced by: Hei Shiren

A 16 years old student of Xiahou and the leader of the school gang, frequently referred to as Brother Biao. Outside, he is a quite feared person within the school except for Ye Yan and Huang Xiaoyan. Despite this, when alone, he is revealed to be extremely frightened of supernatural things. He has a strangely large amount of urines as well as diabetes problems, later discovered to be the fact that he has some sort of magical power within that causes his situation.

Wang Shengli (Chinese: 王胜利; pinyin: Wáng Shènglì)

Voiced by: Wang Yuhang

The Principal of the Xiahou Middle School, he's fat and loud-mouth person who likes to judge. In reality, he is a very powerful censorate, though he doesn't show strength so often. He's often referred to as "Headmaster" due to his position and his capability. Ye Yan and Huang Xiaoyan appear to know something about their Principal, but end up causing trouble for Wang rather than helps.

Wu Ren (Chinese: 无人; pinyin: Wú Rén)

An unnamed bodyguard working for Principal Wang. Like Mr. Wang, he's also a capable censorate, though limited compared to his master. He typically wears black suits and sunglasses. He also takes responsibility in the school when Mr. Wang isn't here, somewhat harsh toward Ye Yan and Huang Xiaoyan.

Ximen Guanren (Chinese: 西门官仁; pinyin: Xīmén Guānrén)

A sixteen years old President of the Student Union in the school, in reality, he is a guardian of yin and yang. While typically normal outside, when he becomes angry, he will unleash his superhuman strength, with his arms become muscularly powerful enough to crush even a monster. His yin-and-yang energy allows him to swallow poisonous smokes and even resurrect himself after getting killed, making him almost entirely immortal.

Sister Yan (Chinese: 阎姐; pinyin: Yán Jiě)

Voiced by: Feng Junhua

She's the former acquaintance of Wang Shengli, the current Principal of Xiahou. Like Wang, she is also a powerful censorate. She's thought to be more than 100 years old but acquires an ability to keep her body from ageing, thus she has a 30-year old appearance. She hates when being referred to as an "old woman". She appears to have a great fondness for Ye Yan.

Che Yongtai (Chinese: 车永泰; pinyin: Chē Yǒngtài)

A demon with an unknown background, he reunites the demon world in 1860 and becomes the Demon Lord, where he begins to unleash his power that lead to various chaos, miseries and conflicts in China. He is later trapped and imprisoned by powerful sorcerers for a span of a hundred years before the start of the series. While he is terrifying by his demon outlook, he is also a pervert from inside, unable to resist beautiful women.

Xi Sha (Chinese: 希纱; pinyin: Xī Shā)

A young demon who comes to the living world only for obsession with cute things, Xi Sha has always been a paranoid demon girl who dislikes living with orders. She has a crush on Ye Yan to a point that she tries to kill Huang Xiaoyan due to jealousy before being prevented by other censorates. She later reconciles with Che Yongtai.

Gu Xiaohua (Chinese: 顾晓花; pinyin: Gù Xiǎohuā)

A fifteen years old fellow Taoist Order with Huang Xiaoyan, she has a complicated and somehow hostile relationship with Huang due to personal ambitions. She has a crush on Ximen Guanren.
