After the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the Russo-Ukrainian War entered a new phase in 2023.
By 11 January 2023, in another change in high command, Valery Gerasimov was promoted to the general in charge of the invasion of Ukraine by Russia.[1]
Russia continued to target civilian areas.
On January 12, Russian forces took effective control of Soledar in Donbas. They also claimed to have captured Soledar, a claim the Ukrainians denied. [2]
