Water Burial [1](2019) is a feature length film by independent filmmaker Shantanu Sen. The film is in Monpa dialect, spoken by the Monpa tribe of Arunachal Pradesh, India. Besides making his debut as a director, Sen has also written the story and screenplay for the film. The entire film was shot in Karbi Anglong, Assam and Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh.

It stars new faces that include Alex Piringu, Tshering Dorjee, Sonam Lhamu, and Tshering Petton.

Water Burial has been inspired by the Assamese novel 'Saba Kota Manuh' by Yeshe Dorjee Thongchi. It has been produced by Faruque Iftikar and co-produced by AM Television.

An anthropologist sets off to find the favourite drink of his friend. The journey takes him to a remote place called Jung when he stumbles upon a dark ritual of a local tribe. He takes up the mission of bringing that ritual into the attention of the mainstream and give it the social acceptance it deserves.

Water Burial has been awarded the Best Screenplay Award at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Film Festival 2019.[2].

So far, it has also made the official selection at the 2020 editions of the following film festivals:

  • Rajasthan International Film Festival[3]
  • Sunshine City Film Festival in Tampa Bay, Florida[4]
  • Druk International Film Festival (Paro, Bhutan)[5]
  • 7th Noida International Film Festival[6]

Because of its selection into a growing number of film festivals, it is creating a buzz in Northeast India for its intriguing topic.[7]
