Wayne Liebhard
Wayne Liebhard (born November 10, 1956) is an American author and physician.
Liebhard graduated summa cum laude from St. John’s University (Collegeville, MN) with degrees in natural and social sciences and a minor in economics, and was named to the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society at the University of Minnesota Medical School. He has since practiced in family medicine and urgent care settings in the Minneapolis area.
Writing career
Liebhard began writing periodically for Minnesota Physician magazine.[1] in the early 1990s, focusing on policy issues surrounding medicine and the doctor-patient relationship.
In 2007, Liebhard authored "Elephants in the Exam Room: The Seven Things You Need to Know About Today's Health Care 'Crisis'", updating it in 2009 as "Elephants in the Exam Room: The Big Picture Solution to Today's Health Care 'Crisis'." Amidst national discussion and debate on the Affordable Care Act, Liebhard appeared in various national media outlets to discuss the topics addressed in these works, including health care financing and potential issues arising from a nationalized health care system.[2][3][4]
Former U.S. Senate Health Subcommittee Chair David Durenberger, then chair of the National Institute of Health Policy, summarized the 2007 Elephants as advocating for the idea "that community and family health professionals, not bionic men, are the key to improved access, quality, and cost".[5] Twila Brase, noted by Modern Healthcare magazine as one of the "100 Most Powerful People in Health Care" for 2009[6], described that year's follow-up as "a warning to patients and a wake-up call to physicians". In 2011, "Elephants in the Exam Room: The Big-Picture Solution to Today’s Health Care ‘Crisis’" won the "Current Events / Social Change" category at the Next Generation Indie Book Awards.[7]
Liebhard continued exploring medical-political themes in his 2016 novel "The Vortex Effect", described by New York Times best-selling author Elinor Burkett as "laced with the keen observations of a first-rate physician, the irreverence of a life-long musician, and the musings of a serious wonk."
Liebhard has also written for other periodicals, including Mustang Monthly magazine[8]
Personal life
He and his wife Joy have two adult children.
Liebhard performs with Twin Cities-area rock group the Solid Gold Band. In 2012, he wrote and produced the group's music video "(A Doctor Sings) The Obamacare Blues"[4]. In 2013, the group's “I Want You To Unwrap Me” was honored by the Great American Song Program[9] and became the basis for the band's second music video.
