WePlanet Australia is an Australian environmental advocacy organisation and the Australian chapter of the international WePlanet network. It promotes science-based environmental policies that support nuclear energy, advanced biotechnology, sustainable food systems and other technological solutions to climate change and biodiversity loss.
The organisation describes itself as eco-humanist and ecomodernist, placing emphasis on pragmatic, evidence-based and science-backed responses to climate change, biodiversity loss and other environmental challenges.
Unlike some traditional environmental organisations in Australia, WePlanet Australia advocates for technologies including nuclear energy, crop gene-editing, cellular agriculture and climate interventions such as solar radiation modification.
Activities
WePlanet Australia advocates for evidence-based environmental policies centred on technological innovation and human progress. Its work focuses on climate change mitigation, biodiversity conservation and sustainable development through a range of policy areas.
Nuclear energy
- Ending Australia's legislative ban on nuclear energy.
- Nuclear as part of a low-carbon electricity system.
- Supporting uranium mining and fuel production.
- International collaboration on nuclear policy.
- Changing perceptions around Nuclear vs Renewables.
Sustainable food systems
- Crop gene editing.
- Precision fermentation.
- Cellular agriculture.
- Reducing the environmental footprint of agriculture.
- Ending animal agriculture
Mining and materials
- Responsible mining of critical minerals.
- The role of mining in the clean energy transition.
- Higher environmental standards for resource extraction.
Electrification
- Heat pumps and reverse-cycle air conditioning.
- Home electrification
- Electrification of transport and industry.
Biodiversity and conservation
- Evidence-based conservation.
- Balancing environmental protection with human development.
- Protecting ecosystems by reducing land-use pressures through technology.
Urban development
- High-density housing.
- Improved greenspace
- Improved active and public transport
- Reducing urban sprawl.
Key People
Co-Founder Tyrone D'Lisle, was a prominent member of the Queensland Greens between 2013 and 2018, including running as the party's candidate in the seat of Dickson against Peter Dutton at the 2013 Federal election. He is no longer a member of the Greens, and states that, "There are scientific blindspots in the Green movement in Australia, such as in gene technology and nuclear energy."[1][2][3]
WePlanet Australia's President is Andrea Leong. Andrea is the former President of the Science Party (Australia) and candidate at the 2016 and 2019 Federal Elections. She has been involved in minor party politics, renters rights groups, and community organising since 2010.[4]
Criticisms
The organisation has been criticised by some organisations opposed to nuclear energy in Australia. The criticism is centred around claims the organisation's position on nuclear energy does not align with economic modelling from CSIRO and Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO). They claim CSIRO's GenCost and AEMO's Integrated Systems Plan (ISP) demonstrate that renewables backed by storage and fossil gas are the cheapest path to net-zero. WePlanet Australia points out that GenCost and the ISP both are constrained by government policy which does not allow nuclear energy in full-system modelling, and that we should avoid using fossil gas as it is harmful to people and the environment.[5][6]
GetUp! have gone so far as to claim that WePlanet Australia has engaged in nuclear disinformation.[7] Other criticisms apply more broadly to disagreements with ecomodernism and what they see as technological fixes rather than system changes.
