Synopsis[edit]
Yoon Si-eun (Park Ji-hoon) is among the top 1% of students in his class and has no interest in anything except studying. Though he is physically weak, he does not back down when he gets on the radar of the bullies in his classroom led by Jeon Young-bin (Kim Su-gyeom). Using physics, quick decisions, and objects in his surroundings, he fights to protect himself from their advances. However, when he gets into deep danger, Ahn Su-ho (Choi Hyun-wook), the strongest kid in his class, and Oh Byeom-seok (Hong Kyung), another bullied kid, come to his rescue. The three form a great friendship as they try to survive high school with the dangerous bullies and shady individuals preying on the weak.
Cast[edit]
Main[edit]
- Park Jihoon as Yoon Si-eun
- A model student in the top 1% of his class who is only interested in his grades. Because he is physically weak, he uses his analytical skills and heightened awareness of his surroundings to fight the bullies that torment him. He has a pretty face but a rather lethargic expression. Despite his weak appearance, he speaks brusquely and does not back down from those that provoke him. When the lead bully in his class sets his sights on him, he becomes entangled in an escalating chain of violence.
- Choi Hyun-wook as Ahn Su-ho
- The strongest kid in his class who is a very open and honest soul. He is not very interested in school aside from fulfilling his promise to his grandmother to graduate and is always sleeping in class. He works part-time at his family's restaurant and at one time, was training to be an MMA fighter. He is often involved in physical fights, using his strength to solve problems. He eventually becomes involved with Si-eun and his ongoing fight with the bullies in their class.
- Hong Kyung as Oh Byeom-seok
- A feeble and tormented kid that recently transferred schools to escape his bullies. He is the adopted son of a wealthy assemblyman. Out of guilt of being intimidated into helping Young-bin bully Si-eun, he convinces Su-ho to help Si-eun and the three end up becoming close friends. However, Byeomseok cannot help but feel inferior to Si-eun, who is brave and intelligent, and Su-ho, who is bold and strong, and those complex feelings consume him.
- Kim Su-gyeom as Jeon Young-bin
- The smug and sadistic lead bully in class who makes Si-eun his new target after losing to him in grades. After pushing Si-eun far enough to fight back, he becomes more and more obsessed with trying to win over him starting a domino effect of escalating violence.
- Lee Yeon as Young Yi
- A witty runaway who got involved in a gang of teenage delinquents but becomes good friends with Si-eun, Su-ho, and Byeomseok. She is taken in by Su-ho's family and works at their restaurant. She regularly jokes about dating Si-eun.
- Shin Seung-ho as Jeon Seok-dae
- Young-bin's cousin and a member of a gang of teenage delinquents who commit violence acts and traffic drugs for money. At its initial screening of the first three episodes at the 27th Busan International Film Festival, the tickets sold out in two minutes. Additional screenings were ordered to meet the demand.[1]
Within the first day of the series premiere, Weak Hero: Class One became wavve's #1 drama in paid subscribers.[1] On the OTT integrated search and recommendation site, kinolights, it ranked #1 for its premiere ahead of strong competition such as Reborn Rich and Under the Queen's Umbrella, despite only being available on a single platform.[7] The drama also ranked #4 on the Good Data Corporation's TV & OTT Drama Series Hot Topic list for its first week[8]. Highlight clips of the drama, particularly those of Park Ji-hoon's performance, went viral on Tiktok, Twitter, Facebook, and various Korean online communities. Related keywords for the drama also dominated the real time Twitter trends.[1]
Critical[edit]
Weak Hero: Class One received overwhelming positive reviews from South Korean critics and audiences. The drama has been praised for it's "realistic depiction of friendship and adolescence" as well as it's intense and brutal action scenes. Praise was also given to the young cast's performances proving themselves as "trustworthy actors" and You Su-min's harmonious direction that "left no room for boredom".[9]
Audiences overseas have given the drama a 9.9 rating on iQiyi[7], a 9.8 rating on Rakuten Viki[10] and a 8.8 on IMDB.[11]
