From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Webster Isheanopa Makombe is a Zimbabwean food-systems activist, nutrition advocate and lawyer. He has worked on issues including food security, nutrition, youth participation and sustainable food systems. He has been involved with the Scaling Up Nutrition movement and the Act4Food Act4Change campaign.[1][2]

Education

Makombe studied law at the University of Zimbabwe. During his studies, he became involved in nutrition advocacy and youth engagement on food and health issues.[3]

His university dissertation examined the justiciability of the right to food under Zimbabwe's constitutional system.[4]

Activism

Makombe began his nutrition advocacy work after participating in training organised by the Zimbabwe Civil Society Organisations Scaling Up Nutrition Alliance. He became involved in programmes concerning nutrition financing, breastfeeding and nutrition during the first 1,000 days of a child's life.[5]

In 2018, he was selected as a youth leader with the Scaling Up Nutrition movement. His work has included advocating for improved nutrition policies and greater involvement of young people in efforts to address malnutrition.[6]

Makombe has also worked with the Zimbabwe Civil Society Organisations Scaling Up Nutrition Alliance on adolescent nutrition programmes in schools. A Scaling Up Nutrition Civil Society Network report identified him as a youth leader in a project aimed at increasing the participation of adolescents in nutrition advocacy in Zimbabwe.[7]

Food systems advocacy

Makombe became a core group member of the Act4Food Act4Change campaign, which advocates changes to food systems and greater recognition of local and indigenous food knowledge.[5]

He has advocated for sustainable agriculture, local food systems and policies intended to address hunger and malnutrition. In 2021, he participated in a United Nations Food Systems Summit discussion on sustainable consumption, where he spoke about the role of local foods in changing consumption patterns.[1]

In 2022, the World Food Forum described Makombe as a global youth leader working on nutrition and food security. The organisation reported that he had participated in advocacy, lobbying and educational activities concerning nutrition and food systems.[6]

Makombe has also promoted the involvement of young people in agriculture and sustainable food production. His advocacy has linked food security with environmental sustainability and the need to strengthen local food systems.[2]

Professional career

Makombe later qualified as a lawyer. He has worked as a pro bono lawyer with Justice for Children, a Zimbabwean non-governmental organisation providing legal assistance to children whose rights have been infringed and children in conflict with the law.[4]

He has continued to participate in public discussions on food security, nutrition and sustainable food systems alongside his legal work.[8]

Other activities

Makombe is also a writer and storyteller. His story The Breadwinner, about an experience from his childhood in Zimbabwe, has been presented through The Moth, a platform for live storytelling.[9]
