Weirdcore
Weirdcore is a surrealist aesthetic centered around amateur or low-quality photography and/or visual images that have been constructed or edited to convey feelings of confusion, disorientation, dread, alienation, and nostalgia or anemoia.[1]
Weirdcore usually tries to replicate edits from the late 90's to mid 2000's to create an aesthetic that can be taken very differently throughout different people; e.g. Some people find it scary or uncomfortable, while finding it very comfortable.
Origins
Currently, the exact origins of Weirdcore are unknown, but may go as far back as the early 2010s. It has recently been determined that the earliest Weirdcore edit with a confirmed date of creation was made in 2017, but there could be earlier examples out there that remain unknown.[2]
History
Weirdcore started to get popular when YouTuber DavidCrypt uploaded his video on YouTube explaining weirdcore, which is no longer extant. Not long after, a Subreddit called r/weirdcore was created for people to post their own weirdcore images or ones they had found for others' entertainment.
