Welcome to Plathville is an American reality television show that premiered on TLC on November 5, 2019.[1] The series is produced by A. Smith & Co.[2] After the first season, the show was renewed for a second season which premiered on November 10, 2020.[3] A third season is set to premiere on August 25, 2021.[4]

About[edit]

Welcome to Plathville follows the Plath family: Ethan, Micah, Moriah, Lydia, their four siblings, as well as their parents, Barry and Kim. The oldest daughter, Hosanna Plath, is not featured in the show. Hoping to instill their traditional values and beliefs upon their children, Barry and Kim chose to raise their children on a 55-acre farm in Cairo, Georgia and have largely abstained from modern entertainment and technology.[4]

The show follows the lives of the older Plath children, as well as Ethan's wife, Olivia, and their interactions with their conservative parents. During the first season, all the single children live at home. In the second season, Micah and Moriah live in a rental home, and Ethan and Olivia disconnect with Kim and Barry completely, cutting ties with the children who still live at home, as well.[5]

Season Two covers the family making changes from: moving off their farm into a new house, Micah and Moriah moving into their own rental house (where they are roommates), Olivia and Ethan struggling with marital stability and move doubt.

Ethan and Olivia[edit]

Ethan Daniel Plath is the oldest Plath children, born May 14, 1998.

Ethan married Olivia Marie (nee Meggs, born April 26, 1998 in Virginia) on October 13, 2018. Olivia owns her own business and is a destination wedding photographer.[6][7]

Olivia has a contentious relationship with Kim and Barry Plath, stating that early in her relationship with Ethan, the parents were judgmental of many of her choices. In the first season, Olivia said, "I have felt very negative about Kim...Because even when Ethan and I were dating, I was criticized for what kind of toothpaste I used, or what I ate, or what I wore, or what I did. I feel like I was constantly critiqued. Literally every time I get in my car to go over there, my stomach is in knots.”[6] In response, Kim stated, "There’s been tension with Olivia and I for a long time because she thinks I’m too controlling...There were things, when they were engaged, that I know she thinks that I disapproved of, but I really didn’t. And the thing is, she never asked me. She never talked to me about it. I’ve just kind of accepted that as par for the course.”[6]

In the second season of Welcome to Plathville, Ethan confronted his parents about their behavior.[5] Since the confrontation, the couple refuses to communicate with the parents, even though that means they cannot talk with the younger children until they turn 18.[5] Olivia has stated that separating themselves from Kim and Barry "was the healthiest and best thing for [the couple];" since then, they have been "focusing on [themselves], focusing on moving and growing."[8]

In 2021, Ethan and Olivia moved away from Cairo, Georgia to create distance between themselves and the Plath parents.[9]

Olivia has stated that she and Ethan are "not ready for kids and ... need to heal and process [their] own childhoods before [they] bring another child into the world."[9]

On her Instagram, Olivia posted that she had contemplated suicide at the end of 2019.[8] In 2020, she "did some deep inner reflection, recognized unhealthy patterns, and started to lean into the discomfort."[8] Olivia is currently in therapy to heal from the trauma of her conservative upbringing, as well as the relationship between her and the Plath parents.[9]

Hosanna and Timothy[edit]
