The Wellington School of Drawing is an independent art school in Wellington, New Zealand, that teaches drawing and painting from observation in the classical tradition.[1] It is based on Cuba Street.[1] It is a registered charity.[2]

History

The school was founded by Cynthia Bowles in 2019.[citation needed] The school held its first annual exhibition in 2019.[3] A later exhibition, Body and Soul, developed from a collaboration between dancers and draughtspeople, with the models' movement used to tell a story.[4]

In July 2022 Stuff published an article by Cynthia Bowles, the school's director,[5] arguing that drawing had been neglected in fine arts education and describing the school's approach to figure drawing.[6]

Governance

The school is a charitable trust incorporated under the Charitable Trusts Act 1957, and was registered as a charity on 18 January 2023.[2] Its stated charitable purposes include providing programmes and courses in drawing and painting, and promoting the study of drawing to advance figurative and representational artwork.[2] As of September 2026, its trustees were Cynthia Bowles, Elisabeth Ngan and Tamahau McArdell.[2]

Teaching

Courses listed by the school have included figure drawing, the draped figure, sustained figure drawing, portrait drawing, cast drawing and still life, artistic anatomy, analytical drawing, master studies, an introduction to oil painting, and figure painting, as well as untutored figure drawing sessions.[1]

Bowles, who studied at the New York Academy of Art and has taught drawing and painting in the continuing education programme of the Glasgow School of Art, teaches at the school as well as directing it.[5][7] Its tutors include Jesse Flynn, a Wellington painter and draughtsman,[5][8] and Ben Dellabarca,[citation needed] an oil painter who is a resident artist at DYED Studios.[9]
