Wendell Hanes is a sound designer/composer[1] with offices in New York City and suburban DC. He won his first Cannes Silver Lion in 2001,[2] for composing the music for the Heineken "Birth of Scratch" spot. Since then he has scored over 1500 commercials for entities such as Mountain Dew, McDonalds, Jaguar, Nike, Victoria's Secret and Mercedes Benz. Wendell has also won a Clio and an Addy[3] just to name a few.

Television[edit]

Wendell composed theme music for television shows and promos on many different networks,[4] including VH-1,[5] The Discovery Channel,[6] TNT,[7] ESPN,[8] and a Gold World Medal at the New York Festivals for Showtime's "All Out Summer" promo. In 2017, his music was heard on Tidal's "After Hours"[9] featuring Tristan Mack Wilds.

Music[edit]

After teaching himself keyboards while recovering from a car accident,[10] Wendell got his career start doing remixes for Epic Records – Hoodratz "Murdered Ova Nuttin" in 1993 and Granddaddy I.U. "Represent" in 1994. Which led to a remix for the Nas/Kool G Rap collaboration, "Fast Life", the Beatnuts title track for the Sucker Punch[11] soundtrack, and two songs for Black Sheep, "8WM" and "Rock Together" featuring Mike G of Jungle Bros, Dave from De La Soul, and Q-Tip.

Wendell hires and mentors producers[12] and artists on becoming composers. And through panels[13] and public speaking,[14] implores those who are looking into making music into a career[15] to try composing and scoring for commercials, TV, and film.

Films[edit]

Wendell scored documentaries such as "Crazy About Tiffany's",[16] "Harry Benson: Shoot First", "Hilleman:[17] A Perilous Quest to Save The World's Children", with the latter winning Best Biography & Audience Choice Best Documentary at 2017 New Hope Film Festival, Best Documentary at Scinema 2016, and Science Communication Award at CAID 10th ISFFA 2016. Other notable films include he scored and composed are 2002's "Hip Hop Hope."[18] 2003's "The Fittest",[19] and "Ghetto Dawg",[20] winner of the Best Dramatic Feature at the 2001 Atlantic City Film Festival. His first job in film[21] was stacking chairs for Spike Lee, which led to working with noted editor Vito DeSario[22]

Music Videos[edit]

Wendell sound edited three music videos in 2017 featuring Nicki Minaj- "No Frauds" and "You Da Baddest" by Future, and Rake It Up by Yo Gotti and Mike Will Made It.

Books[edit]

Wendell is quoted extensively in the book, Music Supervision: The Complete Guide to Selecting Music For Movies, TV, Games and New Media and wrote three volumes of The 30/30 Career: Making 30 Grand in 30 Seconds, featuring commentary from Moby, Wynton Marsalis, and Just Blaze. He also wrote two additional volumes, Becoming A Platinum Composer and Singing on Major TV Commercials. The series was also the title of a Grammy panel.
