Wenxin Wang is a Chinese-born Polymer chemistry and material scientist. He is a professor at the Charles Institute of Dermatology, School of Medicine, University College Dublin (UCD), and a Science Foundation Ireland Principal Investigator.[1]. Wenxin Wang is known for the study on controlled polymerization of multivinyl monomers[2][3] and the non-viral gene therapy of a rare skin disease-recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa (RDEB).[4]

Career

Wang received his B.Sc. from Sichuan University in 1990 and his M.Sc. and Ph.D. from Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 1996 and 1999. He later carried out research at the University of Liège and the University of Nottingham[5].

In 2008 he joined the National University of Ireland, Galway, as a fellow and lecturer. In 2013 he became associate professor at UCD and was promoted to full professor in 2018[6][1].

Research

Wang's study focuses on two areas. Controlled polymerisation of multivinyl monomers (MVMs): Wang proposed deactivation enhanced ATRP (DE-ATRP) to homopolymerize MVMs, overcoming long-standing limitations of Flory-Stockmayer theory.[7] This yielded precise control on the synthesis of single-chain cyclized/knot polymers[8] or hyperbranched polymers[9][10]. High-performance non-viral gene delivery vectors: Wang invented a radically new method to prepare hyperbranched poly (β-amino ester)s (HPAEs)[11]. He applied this platform to treat recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa (RDEB)[12][13].

Entrepreneurship

Wang founded the biomaterials company Vornia Ltd., which was acquired by Ashland in 2018.[14] He also established Blafar Ltd. and Branca Bunús Ltd., which focus on biopolymers and gene therapy respectively[15][16]
