In folklore and fiction, a werebear (or berserkers in Norse mythology) is a human or animal with the ability to transform into a bear or half-bear — whether it be on purpose, accidental, or on command. Much like the werewolf, it is said a human can contract the curse by being scratched or bitten by another werebear, or being placed under a curse. Originating from European folklore, the werebear is considered to be the strongest and rarest of the known therianthropes, while also being depicted as early-Roman servants.
The werebear was not a common creature in fiction, but was widely used in the late 1900s, particularly after the release of Altered Beast (1988). The werebear was the influence of several fictional therianthropes, including Mikhail Ursus (Marvel Comics). The figure has also made appearances in several popular media as foes or protagonists, including The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (2011), Dungeons & Dragons, Dragon Age: Origins (2009), and Brother Bear (2003).
