Wesley Roberts Edens, a self-made American businessman, achieved prominence as a private equity investor and owner of sports teams[1]. His interests in the world of finance include the co-founding of Fortress Investment Group[2] an asset-based investment company and the founding of New Fortress Energy[3].

In the sports field, he and partner Mark Lasry own the Milwaukee Bucks, a team in the National Basketball Association[4]. Wes Edens also owns FlyQuest[5], a team in the online video League of Legends. With Nassef Sawiris, Edens invested in English Championship soccer with an infusion of cash into Aston Villa to become majority shareholders[6].

Early Years[edit]

A childhood in the big sky country of Montana allowed Edens to spend most of his time in the outdoors. The offspring of a schoolteacher mother and a psychologist father, he followed an inclination to read books to supplement the information available on the only two TV stations in the area or to leave the house to find something interesting to do.

His interests turned to competitive skiing, a sport he still enjoys along with rock climbing around Jackson, Wyoming where his Caldera House luxury hotel attracts visitors[7].

Education[edit]

Wes Edens chose to study finance and business administration at Oregon State University[8], and his degree in 1984 led him to accept a job offer from one of San Francisco’s small banks. With the recommendation from a friend who worked at Merrill Lynch, he decided to consider Wall Street as a career.

Lehman Brothers gave him his first job before he moved to BlackRock in 1993 to assume a leadership position as managing director while holding a partnership in the organization[9].

Career[edit]

An innovative investor, Edens maintains an active interest in opportunities that may not occur to others.

Fortress Investment Group[edit]

Edens and some colleagues in finance founded Fortress Investment Group in 1998 and took the private equity fund public just a year before the financial crisis of 2008. He started reinvesting in subprime lending in 2010. Edens founded a separate company that builds “clean energy infrastructure projects” in 2014[10]. New Fortress Energy has interests in the United States and developing countries.

Bucks[edit]

With a promise to keep the Milwaukee Bucks in Wisconsin, Edens and partner Marc Lasry paid $550 million[11] to longtime owner Herb Kohl for the purchase, replacing the Bradley Center. The Bucks organization shows respect for history by its move from the Mecca to the Center and now to the new Fiserv Forum. Wes Edens expressed optimism about the success of a team that has not won a championship for nearly 50 years[12]. He hopes that the new facility can draw the same kind of enthusiastic fans who support Wisconsin’s other sports teams.

Aston Villa[edit]

Ownership of sports teams seems to cross international boundaries with fan acceptance and investment by knowledgeable sports enthusiasts. With their investment of $39 million for a 55 percent stake, Wes Edens and partner Nassef Sawiris stated a goal of “bringing sustainable success to the club.”[13] As lifelong fans of football, they feel privileged to “become part of this great club.” They plan to build on the team’s rich history and respect the loyalty of its fans in a unique culture[14].

FlyQuest[edit]

With experience in business and sports, Wes Edens plans to bring an innovative approach to the development of partnerships, sponsorships and an enthusiastic fan base to favorite esports games[15]. His assembly of a team that can compete in the Championship Series of the new League of Legends for North America represents a challenge that allows him to apply his multiple talents in leadership, visioning and organization. FlyQuest made its entry at the most challenging levels of competition in esports.

Philanthropy[edit]

Wes Edens and his wife Lynn share an ardent interest in supporting charitable causes[16]. His trust, the Chinook Charitable Trust, supports medical causes. Lynn Edens’ trust, Hoof Beat Charitable Trust, supports equity initiatives and global health. They endowed the Edens Professorship in Global Health at Macalester College with a $2 million professorship to support their interests in health and medical geography[17]. The liberal arts college’s reputation for its commitment to internationalism and multiculturalism has earned national recognition.

Personal Life[edit]

An athlete from his young days as a ski racer, Edens enjoys challenging sports such as rock climbing, mountain climbing and horse jumping.
