Wesley John Rogers, 1st Baron of Inman of Westarctica, (1987 – ) is a South African Attorney

Background and education[edit]

Lord Rogers was born in Durban, South Africa in 1987. He was educated at Durban High School (for boys), Durban, and read for his bachelor of laws degree at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. He helped established the International Refugee Youth Focus (NPO) and sat as its first Deputy Director, whilst at University. He proceeded with articles at Legal Aid South Africa and was awarded an annual achiever award. [1] Rogers is also an EXCO member of the Bulwer Safety and Urban Regeneration Forum and a member of the Durban Art Deco Preservation Society.

Career[edit]

Lord Rogers proceeded with establishing his own legal practice under the name and style fo WJ Rogers & Associates [2] in 2018, and has subsequently dealt with a number of high profile criminal law matters. In 2019 he was raised, initially, to the rank of Baronet Clarinton then to the peerage (of Westarctica) as Baron of Inman, of Westarctica in recognition to the legal and constitutional assistance he has provided.[3]

High Profile Legal Matters[edit]

  • Lord Rogers assisted a complainant, Mrs Potgieter in respect of a severe abuse of process she had endured at the hands of a notorious South African police officer, the former Col Rajen Aiyer, who was subsequently dishonourably discharged as a result of his intervention in the matter.[4] [5]
  • Lord Rogers represented the Sherrif of the Court, Kokstad, in respect of a matter where police officials unlawfully seized numerous vehicles from her, and proceeded to bring unwarranted high court proceedings against her.[6]
  • Lord Rogers represented one of three accused, in respect of allegations of a multimillion Rand Fraud scheme, in which his clients was allegedly implicated in selling positions at the University of KwaZulu-Natal Medical School. The matter was ultimately struck from the roll.[7]
  • Lord Rogers represented a South African Pastor, who was accused of allegedly hurling a female associate out of a 4th floor flat window, killing her. The matter made national news.[11]
  • Making legal history in South Africa, Rogers represented a complainant in a matter pertaining to extensive failures by an ex husband and father to pay maintenance to his clients, resulting in his imprisonment for an effective four and a half years.[12]
  • Lord Rogers represented a famous local Hindu Pastor / guru in respect of allegations of Rape, which were later proven to be false, resulting in the clients acquittal. An extensive commentary on the abuse of the law pertaining to rape was provided.[13]
  • In S v Omarjee, Lord Rogers represented the accused, who stood charged with multiple counts of fraud to the total value of R30million.[14]
  • Lord Rogers represented Rescue Care a large private ambulance and emergency rescue service in Durban after the Metro Police undertook a patently unlawful trap operation. Charges were brought against the officers concerned.[15]

Legal Opinions[edit]

  • Lord Rogers was asked to provide input into the legality and difficulties in dealing with theft by shoplifting matters by famous South African Consumer Journalist, Wendy Knowler on radio 702.[16]
  • Legal Input and opinion provided to the press in respect of the legalities of South African Eviction in response to a high profile local eviction of a vulnerable person.[17]

Lord Rogers is unmarried.
