The Western Premiership One is a limited overs cricket competition in Scotland. Established in 2012 following the restructuring of the Scottish National Cricket League, it serves as the premier first-tier league for clubs in the west of the country.[1] The competition is organised by the Western District Cricket Union (WDCU) and is one of the two top-flight regional leagues in Scotland.[2] The reigning champions are Clydesdale.

The winner of the Western Premiership One earns the right to contest the Cricket Scotland Grand Final against the champions of the East to determine the official national club champion of Scotland. The league is currently contested by 10 clubs representing the historic regions of the West of Scotland.[3]

History

While the modern Western Premiership was constituted in 2012, its heritage is tied to the original Western Union formed in 1893.[4] Following the disbanding of the national league structure at the end of the 2011 season, regional control was returned to the WDCU to manage the elite tier.[5]

The league has historically been a stronghold for Clydesdale, who hold a record five titles since the 2012 rebranding.[6]

Format

Matches are played under strict limited overs rules, consisting of 50 overs per side.[7] The league operates on a double round-robin basis. Performance and administration are governed by the WDCU Saturday League Administration Rules.[8] Relegation occurs between Premiership One and Premiership Two.[9]
