Westland Middle School is a public school in Bethesda in unincorporated Montgomery County, Maryland, United States. It opened in 1952 as Western Junior High School, then changed its name to Westland Jr. High School when it merged with Leland Junior High School, and later changed to Westland Intermediate School.

The school is part of the Bethesda Chevy Chase High School cluster.[1]

Westland has a rivalry with the nearby Thomas W. Pyle Middle School. Westland's mascot is the Wildcat (teams are known as the Westland Wildcats).

The school is also part of the International Baccalaureate school program.

Zone[edit]

The school serves the Chevy Chase area, part of Silver Spring, and some areas considered to be Bethesda. Several municipalities, including the towns of Chevy Chase, Chevy Chase View, Chevy Chase Village, and Somerset, and the villages of Chevy Chase Section Three, Chevy Chase Section Five, Martin's Additions, and North Chevy Chase, are assigned to Westland Middle School. The neighborhoods of Westmoreland Hills, Westgate, and Crestview, which are in Bethesda, are also enrolled at Westland. Roughly 800 students are currently enrolled at Westland.[1]

Administration[edit]

  • Principal: Alison L. Serino[2]
  • Assistant Principal: Jason Jefferson[2]
  • Assistant School Administrator: Yvonne Sanya[2]

Alison Serino became principal as of July 1, 2012, replacing Daniel Vogelman, who had served as principal before becoming an Assistant Superintendent in Wilson, North Carolina.[3]
