Weston Mervyn Kirton (born 1954/1955)[1] is a New Zealand politician who has served twice as mayor of Ruapehu, from 1995 to 2001 and again since 2022.

Early life[edit]

Kirton was born in Taumarunui.

Political career[edit]

Kirton was elected to the newly formed Ruapehu District Council in 1986.[2]

Kirton contested Taupo for the New Zealand National Party at the 2002 election, losing to the incumbent Mark Burton. National suffered its worst ever election loss and Kirton's list placement of 51 was not enough to enter parliament.[3][4]

Kirton was elected to the Horizons Regional Council in 2004.[2]

He contested the electorate again at the 2005 election and performed much better, coming within 5 points of Burton. However he had fallen thirteen places on the National list and again failed to be elected.[5][6]

Kirton lost his council seat in 2008.[7]

Kirton ran again for mayor of Ruapehu in 2013, losing to Don Cameron.[8]

Kirton was again elected to the Horizons Regional Council in 2019.[2]

Kirton announced in July 2022 that he would again run for mayor of Ruapehu.[9] His son Andrew Kirton served as his campaign manager.[10]

Personal life[edit]

Kirton is married to Annette, and they have four children including Andrew Kirton, who is a former general secretary of the New Zealand Labour Party. His daughter-in-law Camilla Belich is a current Labour MP, and his brother Neil Kirton is a former New Zealand First MP.[11]

Kirton has performed as a wedding celebrant since 2015, and was officiating a wedding when his 2022 victory was announced.[12]
