Education

Whan Shin Lee (Hangul이환신; Hanja李桓信; January 1902 – June 1984) was a Korean educator and bishop of the Korean Methodist Church, considered one of the foremost Christian leaders in Asia at the time.[1] Early in his life, he attempted to join the Korean independence movement in Gando during Japanese rule.[2] He then studied abroad in the United States twice[3], but returned to Korea without completing his doctoral degree due to the outbreak of the Korean War. Prior to pursuing his doctoral degree, he led youth work in the Ministry of Religion at the Seoul YMCA and at the Methodist Prime Minister's office, representing the former organization at the World Christian Youth Congress in 1953.[4]

Following the war, he was elected bishop of the Korean Methodist Church and led significant restructuring on the national level and the renewal of its missionary work.[5][6][7] He also taught at Methodist Theological University and Yonsei University and served on the boards of Yonsei University and Ewha Haktang.[8][9] While teaching, he introduced modern pastoral counseling to the country.[10]
