WhatFontIs (one of the most popular online font finding tools[1]) is a digital fonts finder[2][3], founded in Bucharest. The system was created by Cuibari Alexandru, launched in June 2010. The service works by uploading an image, and it can identify the fonts from various foundries, regardless of license (free or commercial). [4] It can identify more than 850 000 fonts from the most known commercial foundries (Myfonts, Creative Market, Adobe Fonts) and also the most prominent free font collections (Google Fonts, Dafont) .

WhatFontIs may also be used to find similar fonts to a given one.

The service gets its revenue from affiliate links, paid advertising, and selling premium support that enables access to more advanced features.[5]

History[edit]

In 2018 started to gain traction, with more than 1 million users/month.[6]

In February 2019 ProductHunt has nominated the service as "Product of the Day".[7]

While it lacks a mobile application due to technical constraints, the service can be accessed through desktop and a Chrome Extension launched in 2020.[8]

Competition[edit]

The best known font identifiers include Matcherator by FontSpring, WhatTheFont by Myfonts, Visual search by Adobe, FONT IDENTIFIER by FontSquirrel and Identifont[9]

WebFont Detection[edit]

Great Chrome Extensions for Chrome or Firefox to detect Webfonts: WhatFont and Fonts Ninja.
