Whirlwind D

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Whirlwind D is a UK-based hip hop artist who started releasing records in the early 90s as part of Solid n Mind and has been a solo artist since 2012.[1]

Biography[edit]

Whirlwind D's recording career began in 1990 as the MC for London-based hip hop group Solid n Mind. Prior to this, he was a B Boy in London's early hip hop scene with the Radioactive Crew (later Posse).[2] He recorded 3 12" singles during the early 90s, the first of which, 'An Original Break' reached number 3 in the Tower Records Dance Charts in December 1990. [3] This first single tackled the subject of over-used samples. [4] During this period he performed with many UK hip hop acts including MC Mell O, Braintax, Def Tex and Cutmaster Swift. [5] In 1991 he relocated to the South Coast where he continued to perform doing shows with The Firin' Squad and Tim Westwood to name a few. [6]

After a period away from releasing music, Whirlwind D returned as a solo artist in 2012, releasing his WD40 EP on Tru-Tone Records.[7] Since then he has released a string of records, including two full length albums and a number of singles and EPs. In 2014 he signed a record deal with B-Line Recordings and started performing with Specifik and Mr Fantastic. He has performed across the UK and supported acts such as Public Enemy, Wu-Tang Clan, Main Source and Grandmaster Flash as well as regularly playing in Germany and the Channel Islands. [8] During the course of these releases, Whirlwind D has collaborated with many UK and US-based musicians including Mr Thing, Chrome, Phill Most Chill and Oxygen. [9] Whirlwind D is known for covering a wide range of topics in his rhymes, including touching on many socio-political issues. [10] His, 2018 track 'Labels' was playlisted by BBC6 on the Craig Charles Funk and Soul Show. [11]
