Wiang Prueksa (also spelled Wiang Pueksa; Thai: เวียงปรึกษา) or Wiang Chiang Saen Noi (Script error: The function "langx" does not exist.) was an ancient city located at Ban Sop Kham, in Chiang Saen District, Chiang Rai Province, Thailand.

History

Following the fall of Yonok Nakhon and the end of the Singhanati dynasty, a group of survivors, led by Khun Lang, along with Khun Phanna and other community leaders, migrated east of the former Yonok capital to establish a new city on the western bank of the Mekong River. This settlement was called Wiang Pueksa or Wiang Prueksa, also known as Wiang Chiang Saen Noi (lit. Little Chiang Saen).

The ruler of Wiang Pueksa was not determined by inheritance but by public consultation, a process referred to as “Pueksa” (Script error: The function "langx" does not exist.; lit. consultation or deliberation). The people of the city collectively elected their leader, following principles similar to a democracy with each city having a citizen appointed governor. Altogether, sixteen rulers of Wiang Pueksa were recorded.

However, archaeological evidence found within the Wiang Pueksa area indicates that the city's remains date only to the Lan Na period, not to the earlier era suggested by the chronicles.

At around the same time that Wiang Prueksa was established, a new power arose in the Doi Tung region under Lao Chakkaraj, the first monarch of Hiran Ngoenyang Chiang Lao. Lao Chakkaraj united the surrounding settlements to form Hiran Ngoenyang Chiang Lao and founded the Lao dynasty, which later became the royal lineage of Mangrai, the founder of the Lan Na Kingdom.[1][2][3]
