Wichterles's gymnasium (Czech: Wichterlovo gymnázium) is a public gymnasium in Ostrava, Czech Republic. The school offers 4-year general education programme and 8-year programmes with specializations in mathematics and science or English. Since 1959, about 8,500 students have graduated from the school. The campus, consisting of two buildings, is located on the street Čs. exilu 669/16.

History[edit]

The school was founded in 1956, as an three-year high school on Komenského Street. In 1961 it became a secondary general education school and moved to Čkalovova street. In 1968, an experimental 8-year gymnasium was established on Hrdličkova street, then in 1970 the two schools were merged and in 1972 a newly founded grammar school at Thälmannova 491 was separated. After its move in 1975 to Thälmannova 669, it was unofficially called "Velká (Large) Telmanka". After the street name was changed, it was known as "Exil". The honorary name "Wichterle's Gymnasium", after the Czech inventor Otto Wichterle, was granted to it on 1 September 2006.[2]
