Wicklow-Wexford is a proposed parliamentary constituency that has been recommended by the Electoral Commission of Ireland for Dáil Éireann, the lower house of the Irish parliament or Oireachtas. The constituency will elect 3 deputies (Teachtaí Dála, commonly known as TDs) on the system of proportional representation by means of the single transferable vote (PR-STV)..[1]
History and boundaries[edit]
Wicklow-Wexford was proposed by the Irish Electoral Commission in its August 2023 review of constituencies in the wake of the 2022 Irish Census, in order to ensure compliance with the constitutional requirement for one TD per 20,000-30,000[2]. The Commission found that the constituencies of Wexford and Wicklow had a combined population sufficient to justify the allocation of 11 seats and therefore decided to create a new constituency called Wicklow-Wexford in order to meet the criteria set out under the scope of its review. The preexisting two 5 seat constituencies of Wicklow and Wexford transferred one seat each to the new constituency which then gained an additional seat to meet the three-seat minimum for a constituency[3].
The proposed boundaries include north Wexford from Ballindaggin and Wells up taking in the urban centres of Gorey, Enniskerry and Blessington. From south Wicklow, the constituecy will start above Enniscorthy and finishes below Wicklow, taking in the town of Arklow[4]
