Wiki/Botanical illustration

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Botanical illustration is the art of depicting the form, color, and detail of plant species with scientific accuracy. It is a branch of scientific illustration used in taxonomy, floras, field guides, and botanical education.[1]

Purpose

Unlike flower painting, a botanical plate is a research document: it records diagnostic features — leaf arrangement, venation, floral symmetry, fruit and seed structure — often alongside a dissected flower detail. The illustrator emphasises the characters a botanist needs to identify and compare species.

Practice

Classical plates were made in pen and ink or watercolor on paper. Contemporary practice combines microscopy, digital drawing, and photography. AI-assisted tools such as GLMImage can draft labeled botanical figures from text prompts, though organ counts, venation, and flower symmetry are checked against herbarium material or a flora before publication.[1]
