Wild Tomorrow Fund is a wildlife conservation focused non-governmental organization founded in 2015. Based in New York City, the organization supports wildlife conservation efforts in South Africa, specifically in KwaZulu-Natal province.

Overview

The New York-based nonprofit conservation organization Wild Tomorrow Fund supports government managed provincial and national parks, private game reserves, and other in situ conservation organizations and projects. This is primarily done through the support of supply and equipment purchases, training facilitation, and direct funding of specific conservation and research projects[1][2][3][4][5]. In addition to this effort, Wild Tomorrow Fund manages its own protected nature reserve, the Greater Ukuwela Nature Reserve (see below) where it trains and manages its own anti-poaching rangers, actively manages and protects wildlife & habitat, and works to reintroduce native species and reduce illegal wildlife poaching[6]. In addition to supporting and providing wildlife management, the organization also assists in funding and managing conservation-focused research projects[7][8][9][10][11]. Wild Tomorrow Fund also supports local communities and people that border the protected areas that the organization manages and supports. Fundraising to support the organization's activities and projects is done internationally, with a recent focus on cryptocurrency giving[12][13][14].

The Greater Ukuwela Nature Reserve

In 2017 Wild Tomorrow Fund purchased the Ukuwela property along the Mzinene River, northeast of the town of Hluhluwe. Formerly a commercial pineapple farm, the property was rehabilitated and restocked with native fauna including giraffe, blue wildebeest, zebra, waterbuck, and ostrich. In 2019, Wild Tomorrow Fund purchased the Mfuleni properties that act as a wildlife corridor between the iSimangaliso Wetland Park (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) and Phinda Private Game Reserve[15][16]. These properties together with additional collaborating private properties form the 1,283 ha (3,170 acres) Greater Ukuwela Nature Reserve. Other species found on the Greater Ukuwela Nature reserve include impala, nyala, red duiker, warthog, suni antelope, leopard, spotted hyena, hippopotamus, and Nile crocodile. In 2021 the reserve was proclaimed a nature reserve under the National Environmental Management Protected Areas Act, No. 57 of 2003 and through Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife's biodiversity stewardship program[6]. Since its protection and management by Wild Tomorrow Fund, the nature reserve has also become a site for regional conservation-focused research projects for various taxa[17][18][8].
