Willem Middelkoop (Geneva, 21 August 1962) is founder and director of the Commodity Discovery Fund, which invests in listed junior mining companies. Recently he wrote a series of books about various monetary issues. before that he was best known as a stock market commentator on the Dutch financial TV station RTL Z (2001-2008).

Middelkoop has been born in Switzerland from Dutch parents, who both worked at CERN. After graduating from college in Amsterdam he started working as a photo journalist. From 1998 to 2000 he was briefly chief photo editor at the Dutch daily newspaper Het Parool.

Career in business[edit]

In the nineties Middelkoop started investing in real estate in Amsterdam. He started studying economics, financial markets and the monetary system. He took to the pen and started writing books about the monetary system which in the mean time have been translated in eight languages, including Chinese (Mandarin) and Arabic. In 2008, anticipating a the coming housing crash, Middelkoop launched a webshop where people could acquire physical gold. Within three years the company's turnover rose to 100 million euro after which it was sold to Value8. In 2005 Middelkoop used his private funds to start investing in junior mining companies with significant discoveries. In 2008 he launched the Commodity Discovery Fund to allow others to invest in this speculative yet profitable market. Even though shortly after the launch of the fund a severe commodity bear market took hold, the fund has continuously been growing to a total fund volume of well over 120 million euro to date.[1].

Willem Middelkoop is a member of the Advisory Board of the London based economic think tank OMFIF[2]
