William "Bill" O. Danielson is an American businessman and politician serving as the current Mayor of Irmo, South Carolina, elected in November 2023. He previously served on the town council and has over 35 years of experience in business and community leadership.[1]
Early life and education
Danielson earned a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration and Finance from the University of South Carolina Aiken. With more than three decades in local business—including payroll and real estate—he is known for solution‑oriented leadership and public service.[2]
Political career
Danielson was elected to the Irmo Town Council in a special election in March 2020 by a margin of five votes.[3] He was re-elected in 2021. In November 2023, he defeated Barry Walker by approximately 70 votes in a non‑partisan mayoral race, and was sworn in on December 5 for a four‑year term through 2027.[4]
Civic and regional involvement
Within six months of joining the council, Danielson was appointed to the Executive Board of the Central Midlands Council of Governments (CMCOG), which serves more than 769,000 residents across the Midlands region.[5] He has also served with the SC Philharmonic, Babcock Center, and the Greater Irmo Chamber of Commerce.[6]
Mayoral initiatives
Danielson has prioritized public safety by advocating for police expansion, traffic enforcement cameras, and solar speed signs.[7] In July 2025, he launched the "Mayor's Uplift Initiative" in partnership with the Irmo Police Community Foundation, raising approximately $70,000 to assist local families.[8] He is also overseeing a new $5.8 million town hall project at Moore Park, funded largely through federal and state grants.[9]
Honors
In February 2025, Danielson received the Order of the Okra, the highest civic award from the Greater Irmo Chamber of Commerce, in recognition of his public service and leadership.[10]
Town council dynamics
In March 2025, Danielson accepted the resignation of Mayor Pro Tem Erik Sickinger following criminal charges. A special election was announced to fill the remaining term through 2027.[11]
Personal life
He is a long‑time area resident, active in local business ventures, civic causes, and public events.
