William Hale Harkness (July 13, 1900 – May 10, 1919)[clarification needed] known as Bill Harkness was a philanthropist and heir to a large share of Standard Oil, inherited from his father, William Hale Harkness. Harkness graduated from Yale in 1922 and received a Harvard law degree in 1925. A member of numerous clubs and organizations, he was at one time vice president of the American Geographical Society and the Boys Club of New York. He also authored Temples and Topees, published by The Derrydale Press in 1936.

He married Elisabeth Grant in 1932[1] and later on October 1, 1947, he married Rebekah Semple West Pierce (1915–1982).[2]
