William James Leggett

William James Leggett is a former captain of the Rutgers Scarlet Nights football team. Leggett served as captain during the first ever college football game, in 1869.[1]


As captain of the team, Leggett was most responsible for setting up the first college football game against the Princeton Tigers football team. The Scarlet Knights won the game 6-4.[2]

After his football career, Leggett entered the Dutch Reformed Church as a clergyman. In 1989, Leggett was inducted into the Rutgers Athletics Hall of Fame.[3]
