William R. Jackson (11 February 1906 – 17 January 1979) was the first African American member of the Newark, New Jersey Board of Education in 1942. [1][2][3] Jackson was born in Richmond, VA and graduated from the University of Illinois.[3] He moved to New York City where he married his wife Marion in 1935.[3] He was a former executive director of the YMCA in Newark, as well as the YMCA Trenton office. [4] He also taught at Columbia University, Kean University and Montclair State University[3]. Jackson was appointed to the Board of Education on July 1, 1942 by Vincent J. Murphy.[1]
