William Thomas Putt

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

William Thomas Putt (1725–1797) was an 18th-century clergyman and squire of the Combe estate in Somerset comprising some 4,000 acres.[1]

Background

William Putt, born in 1725, was the son of Raymundo Putt of Combe, Gittisham, in Devon. He was educated at Sherborne, and Balliol College, Oxford where he obtained a BCL in 1751.[2]

The Rev Putt's father had succeeded to Combe and the manor of Gittisham when his first cousin, Sir Thomas Putt Bt, died without issue in 1721. The house and manor had been acquired in 1614 by Raymundo's great-grandfather, Nicholas Putt of Smallridge, Somerset (see the Manor of Gittisham). After his father's death, the manor passed to his eldest son, Thomas, a barrister, who died without heirs in 1787, the manor then passing to his younger brother the Rev Putt.[3]

Tom Putt Apple

The Rev Putt's elder brother, Thomas, or Black Tom as he was known, is generally held to be the originator of the highly regarded Tom Putt cider apple.[4]

Family

The Rev Putt married and had two sons. The first son, Raymundo, was educated at Christ Church, Oxford and succeeded to Combe and the lordship of the manor of Gittisham on his father's death in 1797 and was Sheriff of Devon in 1880. He engaged Sir John Soane to remodel Combe from 1805 to 1811.[5]. The second son, Thomas, was educated at Eton College and Oriel College, Oxford and became rector of Combe Raleigh.
