William Zeiders Shetter (August 17, 1927 – January 23, 2026) was an American linguist and scholar of Dutch studies. He established Dutch language instruction at Indiana University.[1]
Early life and education
Shetter was born in Allentown, Pennsylvania.[1] In 1945, he joined the United States Army at age 18 and served for one year.[1] He earned an AB from the University of Pennsylvania in 1951 and an MA (1953) and PhD (1955) from the University of California, Berkeley.
Academic career
Shetter taught German at the University of Wisconsin from 1956 to 1961 and German and linguistics at Bryn Mawr College from 1962 to 1965.[1]
In 1965, he joined Indiana University in Bloomington, teaching in the Departments of Germanic Studies and Linguistics. He introduced Dutch language instruction at the university and played a central role in building its Dutch program.[1] He retired in 1994.
His early scholarly work included “Phonemics of the Zwolle Dialect: Synchronic and Diachronic,” published in Language in 1958.[2] His work was cited in broader surveys of Western European linguistics, including Thomas A. Sebeok’s edited volume Current Trends in Linguistics.[3]
Shetter was among the organizers of the American Association for Netherlandic Studies (AANS) in the late 1970s and served as its president from 1996 to 2000.[4]
In 1985, Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands appointed him an Officer in the Order of Orange-Nassau for his contributions to Dutch studies in the United States.[1] In 2015, he received the Indiana University College of Arts and Sciences Medal during the 50th anniversary celebration of the Dutch program.[1]

Personal life
Shetter married Janette Pearl Knott on September 12, 1953, in Berkeley, California; they were married for 72 years.[1] He joined the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) in 1964 and was active in the Bloomington Friends Meeting.[1]
Death
Shetter died on January 23, 2026, in Bloomington, Indiana, at age 98. He is survived by his two children, Jessica Shetter and Martin Shetter, and a sister, Claire B. Shetter.[1]
