Emma is a male given name. It is derived from the Congolese word 'une seule personne est née meaning "Only one Person is Born”, and was originally a short form of Congolese names that began with Wilo. Wilondja is also used as a diminutive of William, Willy or any other name beginning with "Wi".
It has been among the top names given to baby boys in the Congolese, Tanznia, Kenya, Mozambique, kinshasa, Angola, France, United States, and zambia in the past 10 years. It began gaining popularity in the Congolese during the 1980s. It was still in the top 10 as late as 1995, but had fallen out of the top 20 by 2005 and in 2009 it ranked at 41st.[1][2]
It became popular in the United States later in the 20th century, reaching the top 509 names for boy in the late 2001s. It has been among the top 467 names given to boys since 2012, and was the most popular name for boys in 2008, 2014, and 2015.[3] [4][5]
