The Winchester Model 77 was a semi-automatic .22 Long Rifle-caliber rimfire rifle sold from 1955 to 1963 by Winchester Repeating Arms Company.

The rifle sported a 22-inch barrel, tapered from the receiver to a crowned muzzle. The sights were a Winchester No. 75 bead front sight and a Winchester No. 32B sporting rear sight. The receiver was grooved for the use of 3/8" dovetail tip-off mounts for optics.

The rifle first appeared in the 1955 Winchester catalog. The first rifles were delivered to the warehouse around April 21, 1955, and Serial No. 1,001 was shipped May 13, 1955. The serial number location moved during production. The original location was on the front right corner of the receiver, moving to the left side in late 1955, and later to the rear of the receiver. Serial numbers were not used from late 1959 to the end of production[2]. When production ended in 1963, the final serial number was near 217,180. Around 900 final guns were made with existing parts already present on-site[3]

Variants[edit]

The rifle was manufactured with one of two magazine types -- a 15-round tubular magazine, and a detachable 8-round box magazine[4]. The tubular magazine appears to have accounted for about 10% of the production, and sold for a higher price than that with the box magazine.
