Winchester Radio is a Community Radio and Hospital Radio station that covers Winchester and the surrounding areas. [1] The station engages in both Music and Speech programming, with a primary focus on those aged 50 and over. As such, the music played fits said audience and is mostly Pop, Rock, and Easy Listening. [1] The station can be found on 94.7FM in the city, as well as online and via the Radioplayer app. [2] Patients at the Royal Hampshire County Hospital can also listen to the station under a free service through Hospedia. [3]

History[edit]

Winchester Radio began life as a Hospital Radio station, with first broadcasts at the Royal Hampshire County Hospital dating back to 1968, and a more consistent service running for over 30 years. [4] In 2015, the station began planning to run a hybrid service between Hospital and Community Radio, aiming to increase activity in the city's older residents, while decreasing hospital admissions and the effects of loneliness. [5] In 2016, Winchester Radio became a Registered Charity to combat these aims. [6]

The station was awarded its OFCOM license in 2016 [7], and officially launched in Spring 2019 on 94.7FM[8] - making it the first local radio station to broadcast in the city since Win 107.2 ceased in 2007.[9]

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Winchester Radio has included special broadcasts to bring services to those isolating, such as Church services[10] - and a special community event, Carols on the Doorstep, during Christmas 2020 [11].

Schedule[edit]

Winchester Radio runs an around-the-clock service for the residents of Winchester and those listening online. Presenter-led programming begins at 7am each weekday with the Weekday Breakfast Show with Joshua Dodd, and is followed by a quiz by Eggheads star Kevin Ashman. Anna O'Brien presents the Lunchtime broadcast and Dan O'Leary presents for an hour in the afternoon.[12] Multiple presenters take over in the evenings, and all of these shows each follow the station's regular musical format.

At 2pm each weekday, the station plays an hour of 'Vintage' music fronted by Jeremy Goldthorpe [13], playing music from the 1920s to the early 1960s. On a Thursday evening, the schedule also changes to Classical music, with pieces presented by Tony Knight, who also hosts a Retro Breakfast Show each weekend.[14][12] Winchester Radio also continues its commitment as a Hospital Radio station each weeknight, playing requests specifically from patients in the wards of the Royal Hampshire County Hospital. [15]

"Winchester Radio - Our intrepid explorer Tony Knight who was one of the founders of the original hospital radio charity here in Winchester in 1984, shares with us why he loves volunteering with Winchester Radio: "Because we provide a truly personal local radio service and it is great being part of the Winchester Radio team, communicating and meeting people. It's a very personal service supporting people in the community, in hospital wards and outside. I'd recommend being involved as a volunteer at Winchester Radio to people as it's fun and we have a real enthusiasm for what we do."
