Winyah Generating Station is a 1,260 MW,[1] four unit coal-fired power station located in Georgetown, South Carolina. It is owned by Santee Cooper, formally known as the South Carolina Public Service Authority.[2] Each unit has a nameplate capacity of 315 MW.[1] Winyah is scheduled to be retired in 2028.[3] As of 2022, Santee Cooper is developing its 2023 Integrated Resource Plan that will propose replacement generation in advance of the retirement of Winyah.[4] Due to a reform bill[5] passed by the South Carolina General Assembly in 2021, the resource plan will be subject to the review and approval of the South Carolina Public Service Commission.[6]
Environmental impact[edit]
In 2020, Winyah released 2,397,815 tons of CO2, 1,179 tons of SO2, and 912 tons of NOX.[2] Winyah has five ponds and two landfills that store coal ash and slurry from the site. One of these ponds was closed in 2017.[7]
